Join us on August 17th from 6:30pm-8:30pm at Richbrau brewery in Shockoe Bottom. Play board games, meet new friends and drink for a good cause!
Richbrau will donate a percentage of their profits made from 6:30-8:30pm that will go towards purchasing a water-treatment filter for refugees in Turkey*.
Donations will also be accepted via Venmo during the event.
This project is in collaboration with Rotaract of William and Mary and is led by the Rotaract club of Istanbul-Adalar, located in Turkey. See below for more information regarding this project and feel free to contact Grace Hall if you have further questions.
*RotaractRVA has pledged $300 for this project. If more than $400 is raised, the remaining funds will be used for upcoming volunteer projects with RotaractRVA.
Water and Sanitation Global Grant in Turkey
This Global Grant is in response to the need for drinking water and sanitation in the Rotary-sponsored container city in Adiyaman, Turkey. After two devastating earthquakes that occurred in February, 2023 with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 respectively, Turkey has suffered immense loss in ten cities amongst infrastructure and human life.
Currently, 1 of every 6 inhabitants in Turkey have been affected by this disaster. Our water-treatment system will filter 360,000 liters per day to improve the living conditions and to prevent the spread of communicable diseases within the community. We hope to impact 5,000 lives amongst the families hosted.
The total project funding goal is $40,974. The Rotaract Club of William & Mary, District 7600 is the primary international partner on this project. Allisyn Lam and Amir Sharitmadari are the primary international contacts. This project is mentored by Rotarian Walter Hughes of the Salem, VA Rotary Club who has led successful Rotary projects for 15 years. The Rotaract Club of Istanbul-Adalar, Turkey is the host of the grant and will oversee all implementation of the project. Yagiz Kiroglu is the primary host contact.
The Adiyaman Municipal government will oversee the operations of the sanitation system once this grant is implemented. Our grant will be submitted in the 2023-24 Rotary year.
